THE FIELD EQUIPMENT

The Seismograph Unit

The seismograph unit used at WCU is the SmartSeis, a 12-channel exploration seismograph manufactured by Geometrics, Inc. The built-in computer and menu-driven software makes the unit easy to use in the field. Menu options include standard set-up parameters that can be easily modified, rapid display of digital signals, and options for infield processing of data to show interpreted depths to subsurface layers. Floppy and hard drive storage and a built-in printer allow for easy storage and transfer of data. (For more information on the unit visit http://www.geometrics.com

Power Source

The seismograph unit is powered by a 12-volt battery that connects to the back of the unit.

Seismic Energy Source

We use a simple sledgehammer f or our energy source.  On the body of the hammer there is a trigger taped to the up side of the handle.  This is connected to the trigger extension line and then connected to the SmartSeis.  A metal strike plate is used in conjuncture with the hammer.
