General Program
Information
The program
has four areas of course work:
Core courses:
A group of basic, foundation courses (system and policy, research methodology,
and contemporary trends and issues) that each student completes.
Specialization
courses: Student selects one from the following four specializations.
- Management
or Education: For students who hold a credential in a medical or
health related field or have significant experience in hospitals or
other health service delivery organizations; the purpose of these options
is career enhancement.
- Nutrition
or Environmental Health: Designed for two types of students, those
who have credentials or experience in these fields, and those who do
not; the purpose of these options is career enhancement or preparation
for entry level positions.
- Gerontology:
Designed for students interested in working with older adults.
Guided
Electives: Student selects course appropriate to the chosen specialization
and career interests.
Completion
options: Student selects one from the following three options:
- Thesis:
Research study conducted by the student for scholarly purposes, administered
through the School of Research and Graduate Studies, supervised by a
faculty committee, defended before the committee and the graduate faculty,
and bound and filed in two libraries on campus.
- Research
Project: Research study conducted by the student for practical purposes,
administered through the Health Sciences Department, supervised by a
faculty member, and presented to the graduate faculty.
- Comprehensive
Final Examination:
Formal written assessment(s) conducted during a student's final semester
of enrollment.
Admission Information
Admission
requirements: Students who pursue the Master of Health Sciences degree
must be officially admitted to graduate study at Western Carolina University.
Admission criteria include:
- Cumulative
grade point average of "B" or higher in all Upper-level undergraduate
course work.
- Satisfactory
scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical portions of the General
Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
- Recommendations
from instructors or employers who are able to judge aptitude for graduate
study.
Admission
Procedure: Applicants to the program must submit a complete application
for admission to the Graduate School according to procedures stated in
The Record: Graduate Catalog Issue. Application forms and materials are
available from the School of Research and Graduate Studies, 440 H.F. Robinson

Students
wishing to apply for admission to the Dietetics Internship must be admitted
to the MHS program and complete a separate Dietetics Internship application
for selective admission. For further information, contact Teresa Breedlove, MS, RD, LDN.
Matriculation
and Graduation Information
- The program
is intended primarily for part-time students with a health-related business
or clinical background. Most MHS courses are taught in the evenings
in Asheville, NC. Many MHS specialty courses are "hybrid"
courses (classroom and on-line with Web-CT).
- Continuous
enrollment is required during the academic year (excluding summer) until
degree requirements are completed or a leave of absence is approved.
- Students
must meet all Western Carolina University requirements for continued
matriculation as a student in good standing and for graduation; Refer
to The Record: Graduate Catalog Issue for the current regulations.
