Western Makes Yahoo.com Honor Roll Once Again

Western Carolina University has been named one of the 100 "most wired" university campuses in the nation by Yahoo! Internet Life magazine, a national publication and guide to the World Wide Web.

Western was ranked the 68th most wired university in the United States, and was listed ahead of such larger universities as Clemson, South Carolina, Southern California, Notre Dame and Georgetown. Other North Carolina universities ranked in the top 100 are UNC-Wilmington(ranked #75), UNC-Chapel Hill(45), NC State(22) and Wake Forest(19).

The rankings are part of the cover story titled "America's 100 Most Wired Colleges 2000" in the May issue of Yahoo! Internet Life magazine's print and on-line editions. This distinction marks the second time the publication has recognized Western for advances in the use of the tools of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process. The magazine, in a 1998 story listing the 50 most wired small towns in America, bestowed the title of "most wired small town" in North Carolina on WCU's
home community of Cullowhee.

WCU Becomes 4th National Merit Scholar Sponsor in NC

Western Carolina University has become only the fourth institution of higher education in North Carolina to be designated an official college sponsor of National Merit Scholars. This announcement successfully concludes one chapter of an ambitious effort announced by Chancellor Bardo to vaporize myths about the quality of Western's academic programs.

2000 Alumni Directory

We are currently in the process of preparing a 2000 edition Alumni Directory and have contracted with Harris Publishing Company to assist us in gathering current information on our alums. You should have already received, in paper form, a survey to assist us in updating our database as well as notifying us of your desire to be included in our next directory. Representatives of Harris Publishing Company will begin a phoning confirmation process within the next few weeks. These representatives will identify themselves by name and company and will confirm the accurateness of the information we have on file. If you have any questions regarding this process, call our office at 877-440-9990 or contact Harris Publishing directly at 800-550-4762. This directory is for official University and Alumni Association use, and for individual communication of a personal nature between members listed therein. Use of the directory for any other purpose is strictly prohibited.
