Since Western's beginning in 1889, the Alumni Association has fostered a sense of community and support to the school through volunteerism and fundraising. The organization was then much like it is today-fun with a purpose.
Today, the Office of Alumni Affairs maintains records for about 35,000 members, WCU graduates who work and live on nearly every continent. Membership in the Alumni Association is free and comes by virtue of a WCU diploma. An Alumni Board of Directors serves as the volunteer governing core. What's new at WCU? What are today's students talking about in the classroom and residence halls? What's your university's position on the issues in higher education? What are your classmates up to?
The Office of Alumni Affairs stirs your recollections and keeps you up-to-date with what's happening on campus. Through class reunions, special events, and publications, we keep you informed as we celebrate your successes-marriages, births, promotions-and console you through the hard times. Western Clubs, scattered throughout the state and Georgia, meet for events such as picnics, ball games, and holiday parties as they represent and support WCU in their locales. For instance, the Western Club of Gaston/Lincoln recently used the proceeds from a golf tournament provide two scholarships to incoming freshmen from Lincolnton and Gastonia. Last year's procedes were used to purchase a computer for an incoming freshman. Club members enjoyed the golf - and brought media attention to WCU's new computer requirement for incoming freshmen. The club plans to make this an annual event.
Why should you become an active member of your Alumni Association? You'll have fun-and help boost WCU in the national rankings. Volume and quality of alumni participation are factors considered by organizations that rank colleges and universities. What better way to strengthen your diploma than by helping WCU gain national recognition?
