Finding Research Funding
Once you’ve developed an idea and a basic outline of your project idea, it’s time to find some funding. If you don’t know how to find grant sponsors, there are three ways to receive assistance
    1. Establish your own account in our searchable online database PIVOT by registering with your WCU e-mail address. You can create your profile with your research/project interests and keywords then activate the automatic electronic alerts. All funding announcements that match your interests will be delivered to you via e-mail.
    2. Contact the Office of Research Administration to request support in locating grant opportunities. You can schedule an appointment with our Director, Lynda Parlett, who will meet with you to learn about your research interests or project idea in detail. Afterward, a customized search for grant resources will be conducted with funding announcements forwarded to you when they are located.
    3. Contact Coulter Faculty Commons Faculty Research Support Specialist Lee Crayton who will meet with you to learn about your research interests or project idea in detail. Afterward, a customized search for grant resources will be conducted with funding announcements forwarded to you when they are located. Lee can also assist you in setting up your PIVOT account and in learning how to conduct searches.

Why sponsors provide grant monies: The reason any sponsor is willing to pay for research or outreach projects is to meet their own research needs or to fulfill their mission. Whether our office conducts your funding search or you strike out on your own, as you begin your quest for funding, examine the components of your project and the mission or need statements of the sponsor for the best fit. If your project meets the sponsor’s needs, you are much more likely to be successful.

Sources of funding:  These may include government (local, state and federal), foundations, corporations and special interest organizations. To begin a search on your own, please feel free to browse among these state and federal funding sources and national funding databases. You can conduct your searches among thousands of available grants and subscribe to your own custom funding alerts via our subscription to PIVOT.

Note- Read Carefully: If the grant to which you wish to apply requires a Cost Share or Match, you must receive approval from your Department Chair and Dean as well as the Provost for the commitment of University resources prior to submission.

The Office of Research Administration is here to assist you so please contact us with your funding search questions.
