The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) shall develop policies and periodically review applications for the use of animals in research, housing, care, and disposal procedures whenever and wherever animals are used for teaching or research purposes under university auspices. It shall recommend appropriate policies and give overall supervision to the handling of all animal experimental subjects in order to assure conformity with federal, state, and university regulations relating to the safety, health, and welfare of both researchers and animals. It will assist the dean of research and graduate studies or designee in developing an adequate system of records and controls on the use of animals as experimental subjects.

Committee Membership
The chancellor shall appoint an IACUC which will report directly to the provost. Membership
shall consist of: the associate dean of research and graduate studies; a veterinarian;
a practicing scientist experienced in research involving animals; one member whose
primary concerns are in a non-scientific area (e.g., ethicist, lawyer, clergy); one
member who is not affiliated with the university in any way and is not a member of
the immediate family of a person affiliated with the university; and one member who
meets the requirements of one or more of the above categories. The associate dean
of research and graduate studies will chair the committee. Both sexes must be represented
on the overall membership of the committee.
