On January 5, 2009 Christopher Pedo joined the staff as the new international student
advisor. Pedo is a native of Kenya who has a broad array of academic and work experience
that make him an excellent addition to the IPS department. After receiving his bachelor's
in Community Development, he went to work at a Michigan-based non-profit organization
called Special Ministries in Kenya for six years.
They focused a lot on community development, relief, organizing doctors to come from the US to provide free healthcare, builders coming from the US, providing education equipment for needy families, creating income generating projects for these communities.
With his experience hosting foreign aid workers to Kenya, he entered into a job at Daystar University in Nairobi as the advisor and resident assistant for exchange students coming from other countries, mostly the US, Australia and Europe. While at Daystar University Chris organized programs for students to experience the great African safari at the Maasai Mara National Reserve and hiking through the snow-capped, 17,000 feet Mount Kenya.
After graduation with Masters Degree in Public administration Pedo wanted to find some sort of position in an international program office, in the meantime he found a job in corporate America. He started working for AT&T coordinating marketing in their Yellow Pages department. After two years of that, he found an open position at WCU and applied for it. In corporate America it is all about getting results and meeting benchmarks, so Chris is hoping to bring a little bit of that to Western. He is hoping to use his experience to market the unique blend of what WCU campus has to offer to international students and also to make the experience of international students at Western as enjoyable as possible.
Chris’s job as International student advisor is to welcome all international students, organize an elaborate orientation program, helping students by listening to them, find on and off campus resources. Educate and advise international students on legal issues about visa, employment authorization, travel, US culture and WCU policy. Work with International programs and services director, Intensive English program director, undergraduate admissions and graduate admissions to issue an efficient international student application process.
At his free-time Chris enjoys playing soccer with other faculty and students at the ultra-modern sports complex facility on campus. Chris has participated in two mini-marathons and enjoys running as a weekend activity and hiking up mountains. He is married to Rachel Jessica Pedo from Champaign-Urbana in Illinois. They are celebrating their third year of marriage and enjoying the mountains of North Carolina.
