Interesting Facts:
I was born and raised in Winslow, Maine, so I’m one of those “damn Yankees.”  I enlisted in the Air Force shortly after high school with the simple plan that I’d do one tour of duty, get the educational benefits, get out and go to college.  Twenty six years later I retired as a Master Sergeant – so much for a simple plan.  Military service gave me the opportunity to change jobs regularly, visit interesting places, work with great people, earn an Associate’s degree in applied communications technology, and best of all meet my wife of 30 years.  When I retired I looked forward to a life of quiet contemplation.  I would have the time to write the “great American novel” while my wife tended her roses.  Alas, an addiction to living indoors and eating regularly forced me to return to the ranks of the employed.

I wanted to try something different from military service for my second career and found myself at Western Carolina University.  I’ve been with the Coulter Faculty Commons a couple of years now, having cut my WCU teeth in Research Administration.  In keeping with my heart felt belief that specialization stifles creativity, I finally completed my Bachelor’s degrees in Management, English and Computer Information Systems and am currently working on my Master's in Space Studies with a consentration in Planetary Science.  I’ve been working with computers since Bill Gates was only a millionaire.   In all that time I’ve focused on using computers to make the job easier, more efficient, and sometimes more fun. I think the Coulter Faculty Commons is the perfect place to use my talents and inclinations.

Boring Facts:
Favorite Quote:  “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”  Mark Twain (variation attributed to Abraham Lincoln also acceptable)
Favorite author: Isaac Asimov
Favorite non-fiction book:  The Universe by Isaac Asimov
Favorite fiction book:  The Great American Novel (working title) – by John Hawes

Prophetic statements I have made:
1. “Why would anyone want to use a mouse to point at some silly icon when there are perfectly good DOS commands to type?”
2. “No one is going to waste the time to dial up the internet when they’ve got a 20 megabyte hard drive that holds all the information they could ever possibly need.”
