Swim Programs

Western offers youth swim programs in the summer with refresher courses in the Fall and Spring. Michael Creason, instructor for the programs, is retired as an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at WCU. He has been certified by the American Red Cross to teach infants and children and has been a swimming instructor for more than 34 years.  

Please note that all participants in WCU swim programs must carefully read and agree to the terms of the WCU Campus Recreation Center and Reid Pool Assumption of Risk and Release/Waiver of Claims

SESSION 1
May 13-24 Monday - Friday for 2 weeks
     Shark Level (beginners) 5:30 - 6:30pm - CLOSED

SESSION 2
June 17- July 2  (Monday - Friday for 12 days)
     Shark Level (Intermediate, Swimmer & Adv Swimmer I & II)  9:00 - 9:50am
     Shark Level (Beginners & Adv. Beg.) 10:00 - 10:50am
     Shark Level (Beginners & Adv. Beg.) 11:00 - 11: 50am
     Minnows Level (6 mth - 3 years) 5:15 - 6:05pm -- THIS SESSION IS NOW FULL
     Fish Level (Ages 3-5) 6:10 - 7pm -- THIS SESSION IS NOW FULL
     Note:  Minnows and Fish levels run for only two weeks (10 days)
                They will not meet on July 1 & 2

July 8-23   (Monday - Friday for 12 days)

Descriptions

Minnows Level - 6 months - 3 years
Fish Level - 3 - 5 years and up
Shark Level - 6 years and above

Minnow and Fish Level
An adult must be in the pool with the child.
Ages for this program are 6 months to 3 years for Minnows and 3-5 years for Fish Level
Infants must wear a swim diaper
Each child and parent must rinse off before entering the pool.
Parents are encouraged to arrive 10 minutes early to get ready for pool time.
Children age 3 may take either Minnow or Fish Level. Better swimmers usually enjoy the Fish Level.
A child may enroll in more than one session with a second registration
All sessions are held in Reid Pool
Youth may register for multiple sessions

Shark Level (6 years or older)
Skills include stroke growth (Intermediate), stroke distinction (swimmer), and skill advancement and stroke expert (advanced swimmers)
Beginner and Advanced Beginners skills include water discovery and principal skills (beginner) and stroke alert (advanced beginner).
Beginners skills include water discovery, breathing techniques, arm mechanics and leg kicks.
Parents are not allowed in the pool or the pool area while class is in session.
