Asheville High, A. C. Reynolds High, and West Henderson High Win Team Titles At WCU Computer Science Contest
Asheville High, A. C. Reynolds High, and West Henderson High captured team titles Tuesday (May 4) at the tenth annual Western Carolina University Computer Science Programming Contest.
More than 80 students from ten of the region's high schools demonstrated their programming skills at WCU at the contest sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The students were selected by their schools to compete in the contest because of their excellence in computer programming. The students compete in teams of one to three students and participate in one of three programming language divisions. The three programming languages are C++, Pascal, and Basic, said chair Mark Holliday, WCU associate professor of computer science.
In the C++ programming language division the Asheville High School team sponsored by Richard Gabriel and consisting of Ben Lee, Brian Pike, and Luke Lenzen captured the title. The Asheville High School team sponsored by Richard Gabriel and consisting of Jimmy Puckett and Matt Frost was second. The Carolina Day School team sponsored by David Fortney and consisting of Dustin Benedict and Owen Evans was third.
In the Pascal programming language division the A.C. Reynolds High School team sponsored by Jeff Wilson and consisting of Daniel Franks, Nick Robbins, and Phillip Shipman captured the title. The A.C. Reynolds High School team sponsored by Jeff Wilson and consisting of Eric Seyden, Kenneth Moody, and Sean Morrison was second. The A.C. Reynolds High School team sponsored by Jeff Wilson and consisting of Carrie Clabaugh, Colin Moore, Joseph Taylor was third.
In the Basic programming language division the West Henderson High School team sponsored by Larry Ashcraft and consisting of Alan Newberry, Brian Newberry, and Jacob Kelly captured the title. The McDowell High School team sponsored by Richard G. Lindsey and consisting of David Kelley,Justin Jaynes, and Steve Yarbough was second. The North Henderson High School team sponsored by Sheri D. Lewis and consisting of Zack Sobin was third.
