From investigating and assessing sustainable forest management practices in the southern Appalachians to participating in global team research across the Atlantic Ocean in Africa and studying coastal shorelines or runoff and erosion in burned areas, Western’s geosciences and natural resources department faculty set the bar for involvement and excellence here at home and around the world.

Peter Bates: Bates is involved in the development, application, and assessment of sustainable forest management practices in the southern Appalachians. learn more
Joni Bugden-Storie: Bugden-Storie is a Principal Investigator on the "Prototype River Cane Geographic Information System" project funded by the Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources (RTCAR). She’s also a Principal Investigator on a research project in Argentina and Brazil that is funded by the Canadian Space Agency to use polarimetric Radarsat-2 data for a land-cover and -use analysis. This venture is a continued collaborative effort based on research conducted during her Ph.D.
