Do you belong outdoors?
Ask our majors why they picked geology and most of them will tell you that the walls
simply couldn’t contain them. Geologists start out as hikers, bikers, and fishers,
but our fascination with the environment and the earth underfoot isn't satisfied by
hobbies alone. If your interests lie outdoors, you just might belong here!
Do you enjoy being outdoors? Do you enjoy knowing your work matters and will improve our living conditions, provide new resources, or extend our knowledge about earth? If so, geology may be the career for you!
What Do Geologists Actually Do for a Living?
Many of our graduates go on to be earth science educators, planners, environmental geologists, work for state and federal offices, or go to graduate school to study fields as diverse as planetary geology and marine sciences. If you're interested in a career in geosciences, check out possible career paths.
Although many of our graduates go on to work in the environmental field, the American Geological Institute (AGI) produced a more comprehensive brochure on geology career paths that you may also find helpful.
What are the Job Prospects?
Job prospects are at an all-time high. It is estimated that there will be more jobs than students graduating to fill them in the near future. Learn more by listening to National Public Radio's program on Geology Students Striking It Rich.
