TESOL Program Information

As a result of Western Carolina University's program prioritization process, the M.A., M.A.T. and the M.A.Ed. in TESOL have been scheduled for discontinuation. If you have general concerns and questions, information can be found on the Program Prioritization webpage at or you can also contact the program director or the English Department at 828-227-7264.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, or TESOL, is an increasingly demanding academic field. Its principles are similar to those in English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL).

In TESOL, instructors teach the English language to non-native speakers, regardless of their language backgrounds. Through an extensive period of training, WCU TESOL students learn the essentials of teaching English as a second language, along with strategies to help their students succeed. Students can use their work in TESOL in a variety of fields, and as a result, they gain both valuable knowledge and flexibility for employment.

Western Carolina University offers three degrees in TESOL to prepare students for working with students in a variety of learning contexts. Click on each degree for more information.

  1. M.A. in TESOL
  2. M.A.Ed with a TESOL concentration
  3. M.A.T. with a TESOL concentration

Individuals who complete this program will leave with:

  • A solid grasp of the linguistic theory that supports teaching English to speakers of other languages.
  • Practical strategies and skills for working with ESL learners in K - 12 and adult contexts.
  • Foundational knowledge that will prove invaluable for further study in English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics.

With courses that typically meet one evening a week, many at our Biltmore Park Town Square location, this program is well suited for full-time professionals who are looking for a way to broaden their careers.
