Master of Arts (M.A.) in English - Concentrations available in literature, rhetoric and composition, or professional writing (both technical and creative). Thesis or non-thesis option.
M.A.Ed.-Master of Arts in Education - For individuals with a B.S.Ed. in English who want to become more professionally competitive. English programs are offered in two-year college teaching and comprehensive education.
M.A.T.-Master of Arts in Teaching, English - Designed to enable students holding degrees other than education degrees to study in selected teaching programs at the graduate level. Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in the area of concentration and meet departmental prerequisites.
Western Carolina University offers three degrees in TESOL to prepare students for working with ESL students in a wide variety of learning contexts.
M.A.-TESOL - For individuals not interested in licensure to teach in public schools. These students would be qualified to teach in a variety of settings or go on to further graduate study (PhD).
M.A.T.-TESOL - For individuals from all backgrounds with no prior experience with teaching. This program leads to North Carolina licensure.
M.A.Ed.-TESOL - For individuals who already have licensure and already teaching in the public schools system, but who want or need a graduate degree in TESOL.
