Where Do WCU Communication Students Do Their Internships?
How About Chicago?
While you might think Cullowhee is a little out of the way, students from the Department of Communication do their internships in some of the largest markets in the country. A student is qualified to do their internship after completing 90 hours of study. Typically, many students choose to do their internships between their junior and senior years. Some students choose to do their internship their last semester in school.
From Justin Rhodes who did his internship summer 2010 at the CBS Television affiliate in Chicago:
" I did my internship in summer 2010 with the CBS Television affiliate in Chicago, Ill.
My main duties were to work at the assignment desk and gather information from phones,
e-mails, and police scanner and to synthesize it into a document for reporters and
producers. Although the majority of the time I spent working was at the news desk,
I also was able to go out on assignment and really get a feel for journalism. Some
of the most exciting assignments were working with the Cook County Sheriff's Department
on a drug bust, covering the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) as they won the Stanley Cup
and the parade that ensued, and working on the Blagojevich corruption trial.
The internship really did solidify my necessity for a career in broadcasting and more
specifically in television news. I found more passion for what I'm studying in school
and a more intense drive to continue learning about news. Of course living in downtown
Chicago was a plus. I can only encourage people to venture outside of their own comfort
zones and to allow themselves an opportunity to push their own limits. It's true
that we learn from books and lecture; however making mistakes and trying again are
some of the best teachers I've had so far."
