Whether your passion lies in broadcasting, broadcast sales, human communication, journalism or public relations, at WCU we’ll help you develop that passion into your life’s work.
Dynamic Programs
At WCU, you’ll immerse yourself in dynamic academic programs that offer a variety of undergraduate degree concentrations and minors. You’ll combine your chosen field’s concepts and theories with hands-on experience both inside and outside the classroom through faculty-student collaborations and professional internships. And, for those who qualify, the Department of Communication has advanced Honors College programs in broadcasting and speech communication.
Cutting-Edge Environment
Cutting-edge technology and facilities are a hallmark of the WCU experience. Your “classrooms” will include electronic classrooms, computer labs, a world-class digital TV studio in WCU’s Center for Applied Technology, and the region’s only local FM radio station.
Professional Certification
For students who are seeking careers in professional broadcast sales and television station operations the department hosts professional certification examinations from the Radio Advertising Bureau and the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Professionally certified WCU graduates are sought out by the industry.
Innovative Faculty
You'll learn from and work with innovative faculty members who bring their unique blend of professional and academic expertise to your studies. A diverse group of creative individuals, their focus is on providing you with the finest learning experiences and helping you to launch your professional career.
Exciting Internships
Tucker Horne, a senior majoring in communication at Western Carolina University, won the college intern equivalent of a gold medal after earning a position working with Canada’s largest private television broadcast company as it covers the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.
Award-Winning Service Learning
The Department of Communication was honored by the Service Learning Department with the 2011 Leading Light Award. The award recognized the department's community involvement efforts. Students in nearly all of the major classesdid projects with various groups and agencies throughout the area.
