A scholarship will be awarded from the Stacy O’Connell Scholarship and Research Fund to a student majoring in Biology at Western Carolina University. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to a Junior or Senior student with interests in pursuing further study in fields related to breast cancer. The student is also expected to work with a faculty member on a project related to cancer research, including but not limited to molecular genetics, immunology, or the ecology of disease.
The scholarship will pay $1,000 toward tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year and $500 for research related expenses. A recipient who continues as a student at Western Carolina University is eligible to apply for renewal of the scholarship for a second year.
Selection of the scholarship recipient will also be based on academic achievement and involvement in school and extracurricular activities.
