Women's History Month Events
The Women's Studies Committee is an interdisciplinary committee made up of faculty from every undergraduate college. The mission of the Committee is to promote the development and dissemination of knowledge about women and gender at Western Carolina University and within the region. The Committee accomplishes its mission by creating and expanding the curriculum, bringing women's scholars to campus, serving as a resource to the campus and community, and addressing women's and gender issues on campus.
Program Goals
The Women's Studies program at Western Carolina University currently consists of a minor, which is continuously growing. Through academics, the minor provides an understanding of women's issues and contributions to society by emphasizing abilities and gender roles. Using interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teaching, the Women's Studies minor encourages the inclination of women's perspectives and accomplishments within all academic disciplines as opposed to restricting women to only certain categories. The goals of this minor include:
- Providing the realization of a women's perspective across disciplines
- Understanding what the world looks like from a female point of view
- Looking at issues which include women's health, family, sexual harassment, family violence, rape, etc.
- Providing a voice for women in the areas of law, politics, literature and history
