WCU’s Department of Social Work offers classes covering a wide range of topics relating to social work.
Also, the Department offers hands-on experience through the field practicum, which is the most indispensable component of social work education. This experience gives you, the student, the opportunity to gain practical experience in preparation for professional social work practice. Through this component you are able to test your own values and attitudes and develop an awareness of self which is essential in social work practice. Students are offered the opportunity to learn by doing, translating their abilities and knowledge into action.
The field practicum is not just another social work content area but a dynamic learning situation. Some specific content is better taught in an agency setting but basically, field instruction strengthens previous knowledge and gives awareness of the inter-relatedness of theory and underlying value systems. As a result, students will be able to transfer insight, knowledge, skill, and method into real-life situations.
