Dr. Shawn B. Collins received in 2012 his PhD in Leadership from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI, receiving the 2011-2012 School of Education’s Outstanding Dissertation Award and was named an AANA doctoral fellow. In 2008 he earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Rush University, College of Nursing in Chicago, IL. Dr. Collins finished his anesthesia education in 1995 at the Erlanger Medical/University of Tennessee - Chattanooga anesthesia program in Chattanooga, TN.
Dr. Collins has been involved with the WCU anesthesia program since its inception,
fulfilling roles as faculty, assistant director and then director. He currently serves
as the Interim Associate Dean for the WCU College of Health and Human Sciences and
Director of the Nurse anesthesia Program.
Over the last 10 years Dr. Collins has lectured nationally and internationally (Madrid, Spain; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; and Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) on continuing education of nurse anesthetists in developing countries and evidence-based practice. He is also an expert in emotional intelligence and has lectured nationally on the topic. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists. Dr. Collins also serves on the nurse anesthesia steering committee for Health Volunteers Overseas. Dr. Collins currently serves on the NBCRNA National Certification Examination Committee and has served as an advanced education nursing grant reviewer for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions. Dr. Collins has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and is first author of a chapter in the 5th edition of Nurse Anesthesia (Hepatobiliary anesthesia). He currently resides in Mills River, North Carolina.
