Special Information for Transfer Students
For your convenience, the School of Nursing has compiled a list of the equivalent
courses available at North Carolina Community Colleges. Please note that not all community colleges offer every course.
Western Carolina University B.S.N. Program
The right-hand column identifies North Carolina Community College courses on the semester
system (since 1997) that transfer to WCU to meet each requirement.
| Group 1. Prerequisites in the WCU nursing major. | |
| WCU Course Number & Title | Community College Equivalent |
| BIOL 291, Anatomy & Physiology I | BIO 165 or 168 |
| BIOL 292, Anatomy & Physiology II | BIO 166 or 169 |
| HSCC 260, Microbiology | BIO 175 or 176 |
| PSY 150, General Psychology | PSY 150 |
| CHEM 132, General Chemistry | CHM 130/130A (RN to B.S.N. only); CHM 131/131A, 135, or 151 |
| CHEM 132, General Chemistry | CHM 132, no longer needed for RN to B.S.N., recommended for nurse anesthesia |
| Group 2. Liberal Studies. Take these before or with NSG-prefix courses. If you have a North Carolina Community College Associate of Arts degree OR have COMPLETED the General Education Core at a NCCC OR have a previous bachelor’s degree, these are waived. Any other circumstances mean that your credits will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis and MAY NOT meet a Liberal Studies requirement. | |
| WCU Liberal Studies Category | Community College Equivalent |
| “The Core,” (21 hours) | |
| “C1” Writing (6 hours) | ENG 111 and ENG 112, 113, or 114 |
| “C2” Mathematics (3 hours) | MAT 115, 140, 145 or 165 or any MAT course 120 and higher. If you need a statistics course for graduate school, take MAT 151 or 155. |
| “C3” Oral Communications (3 hours) | COM 110 or 231, or ENG 115 |
| “C4” Wellness (3 hours) | HEA 110 or PED 110 |
| “C5” Physical and Biological Sciences (6 hours) - Courses must be taken in two disciplines. The science prerequisites to nursing waive these 6 hours. | |
| “The Perspectives,” (21 hours) | |
| At least one Perspectives course must be upper-division and not under a NSG prefix. If taken at WCU, this course counts towards the upper-division elective hours needed from WCU for the BSN. This course may not be taken at a community college, but is waived if the student has the AA or the 44-hour General Education Core from a NCCC. | |
| WCU Liberal Studies Category | Community College Equivalent |
| “P1” Social Sciences (6 hours) - Courses must be taken in two different disciplines. | BUS 110, ECO 251, POL 110 or 120, SOC 210 |
| PSY 150, which is a prerequisite to nursing, waives 3 of these 6 hours, but nursing majors must replace the waived hours with 3 hours of any other Perspectives course (not necessarily a “P1”). | |
| “P2” no longer used—content shifted to C5 | |
| “P3” History (3 hours) | HIS 111, 112, 114, 115, 121, 122, 131, or 132; HUM 121 or 122; REL 112 |
