The mission of the Emergency and Disaster Management Program is to enhance the safety and security of the community, the region, and the nation by providing a functional and relevant education and other assistance to those who are, or seek to be, responsible for preventing, mitigating, responding to, or recovering from, a natural, man-made, or technological disaster.
Western Carolina University is conducting a needs assessment to determine interest
in an Emergency and Disaster Management certificate program. Subjects would be taught
on-line in eight-week blocks. Participants who qualify for the Bachelor of Science
program may be able to convert certificate courses into academic credit.
Possible topics include:
- Business Continuity and Resiliency Issues
- Incident Command/Unified Command
- Risk Assessment and Vulnerability Analysis
- Rapid Damage Assessment
- Hazard Mitigation

The Emergency and Disaster Management Program is specifically designed to prepare you to assume leadership and professional career positions in government, non-profit agencies, and the private sector after graduation.
Effective 2006, new majors are accepted into the online program only. The online program will provide you with the opportunity to advance professionally and academically by taking requisite courses through part-time study.
Our dedicated faculty teach an interdisciplinary curriculum that applies the evolving knowledge and standards of public safety and security management and stays current with developments in the field. We offer you a B.S. major and a minor course of study.
