Biography:
Afer receiving received her BM and MM in Music History and Literature at the University of Southern Mississippi, Joy went on to study musicology at New York University before moving overseas. While living in Hong Kong and Indonesia for 17 years, she became fascinated with Indonesian gamelan music.
In Jakarta, Indonesia she studied Central Javanese gamelan with Pak Wakidi and Pak Suparno while teaching Elementary Music in the PSKD Montessori School and the Jakarta International School. Upon returning to the States, she studied with Pak I.M. Harjito and Pak Sumarsam, playing with the Javanese gamelan ensembles at Wesleyan University and the Indonesian Consulate group in New York City (Gamelan Kusuma Laras).
After moving to the WNC area in 2005, Joy became involved with the WCU Low Tech Ensemble. She has been an Adjunct Instructor since 2006, teaching gamelan, class piano, and music appreciation.
