Apply to WCU Alternative Licensure

Please follow the steps below to apply to Western's alternative licensure programs.

Step One - Choose A Program
Check out our Alternative Licensure Programs to see which program is right for you.

Step Two - Receive Program Approval & Official Personalized Plan of Study
Complete the Eligibility/Pre-Evaluation Form online and submit one official copy of transcripts. You will receive a confirmation e-mail that we have received your eligibility/pre-evaluation form. A program adviser will develop a plan of study that will satisfy licensure requirements. The initial review process may take up to 3-4 weeks to complete.

Step Three - Apply to WCU
Apply to Western Carolina University. Along with your official personalized plan of study, you will receive instructions on how to apply to the university. Out of state applicants should check out our Applicants Outside of NC page to determine eligibility and residency for online programs. Tuition and Fees are calculated by the credit hour. Be prepared to factor other costs into your program budget, including but not limited to TaskStream, books, supplies, etc.

Note: Please know that at any time you may be asked to provide additional information regarding your candidacy for an alternative licensure program at WCU. If requested, this additional information will be used to assist in the decision-making for approval of any licensure only program plan.  This may include, but is not limited to, the following items: 

  • Statement of Purpose (Aspirations for Teaching)
  • Letters and contact information of professional references
  • Campus interview
  • Criminal background check
  • M5-120 Personality Scale
  • Educator's Professional Beliefs About Diversity Scale

Please be prepared to provide this information if requested in order to expedite the development of your program plan.
