RELATED INFORMATION

“I LOVED having a UP participant in my class! She was attentive, participatory, courteous and consistently on target with her comments, contributing well to conversations. She was excited about her work with partners with planning and teaching routines. Having her in class has helped me to grow myself as a teacher. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Marissa Ray, instructor in special education

FACULTY/STAFF DIRECTORY

Resources for Faculty Working with UP Participants

All UP participants audit classes based on their future employment and independent living goals. When auditing, participation is encouraged, as tuition and fees are paid in full by UP participants. UP participants are encouraged to participate with their peers to the greatest extent possible and complete modified projects (PDF). WCU undergraduate students also serve as class supports until classmates initiate natural support to the UP participants.

At the end of the course, UP participants receive an “AU” as a grade for the course if audit forms are signed at the beginning of the semester and turned into the Office of the Registrar. With audits, WCU faculty members are not required to enter grades at the end of the semester but are welcome to provide UP participants with ongoing feedback. The UP Program also will send an evaluation form  (PDF) to gain feedback on participant classroom performance during midterm and final exam weeks and to assess academic progress for the UP Certificate of Accomplishment awarded at the end of the program.

We hope to expand our course options and WCU faculty collaboration in future semesters. Naturally, some WCU faculty have expressed anxiety about having a person with an intellectual disability in a class, but over time and with support, many faculty members become more comfortable and have found the experience very rewarding in helping them grow in their teaching practices and experiencing more diversity in the classroom.
