"I have learned so much about disabilities, education, and most importantly friendship. This program has given me valuable knowledge about individuals with disabilities but what I am most thankful for are the friendships I have gained through this program. I have made everlasting friends with and without disabilities because of this program. I can honestly say that my college experience has been made far better because of the UP program."

You don’t have to be a special education major to volunteer with the UP Program. Any WCU student interested in volunteering can get connected with our UP Program extended family. We work hard to accommodate your available volunteer hours and provide you with training, memorable experiences and friendships to last a lifetime.
What Do Volunteers Do?
Volunteers (also known as unpaid natural supports) are a big part of what makes the
UP Program so great! An interested volunteer is trained by WCU students serving as
paid natural supports and UP Program personnel. Here are several ways you can volunteer
to support UP participants:
- Attending and supporting participants in classes
- Supporting/tutoring with projects and homework
- Attending sporting events
- Serving as a job coach
- Supporting campus social events (e.g., religious groups, cheerleading, swimming, clubs, movies, plays, ballgames)
- Providing personal care (suitemate, morning and night routines)
- Mentoring and teaching personal development goals
- Attending and giving input at person-centered planning meetings
- Helping collect data on Individualized Plan for College Participation (IPCP) goals
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the UP Volunteer Form (docx) and e-mail it to Rebekah Norris at renorris1@catamount.wcu.edu. She will add you to the UP Program master volunteer list and Kelly Kelley (UP Program Coordinator) will contact you with additional volunteer information.
