If you already have a teaching license, but would like an advanced degree, the Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) is designed for you.
The program leading to the M.A.Ed. degree requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate study consisting of a professional core of 12 semester hours and a concentration of 24 hours. Each of the concentrations leads to a recommendation for Advanced Competencies licensure from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Concentrations may have additional requirements for admission specific to the concentration. Completion of degree requirements includes a satisfactory portfolio demonstrating advanced competencies for all concentrations. An oral and/or written exam may be required for some concentrations.
Since a majority of your work is done in your academic concentration, contact the appropriate person in your discipline if you have specific questions regarding the work in that area. The following people are the contacts for each of the concentrations:
• Art: Erin Tapley
• Biology: Sabine Rundle
• Chemistry: Brian Dinkelmeyer
• English: Annette Debo
• Mathematics: Axelle Faughn
• Music: Mary Kay Bauer
• Social Sciences: Elizabeth McRae
• Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL): Chandrika Balasubramanian
For questions regarding the professional educational requirements for this program, contact Eleanor Blair Hilty.
