Psychology (PSY) Department

The Psychology Department at Western Carolina University offers one of the largest undergraduate majors at the university. Our faculty maintains expertise in multiple areas (e.g., clinical psychology, school psychology, forensic psychology, evolutionary psychology, & developmental psychology) and teaches a wide variety of exciting and engaging courses including Introduction to Psychology, Child Developmental Psychology, Human Sexuality, and our capstone Senior Seminar course. We also have an active student organization, Psi Chi.

In addition to our undergraduate major and minor we offer three graduate degree programs. The Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) program trains students to work as psychologists in school settings. The main focus of the Masters in Clinical Psychology program is to assist students getting into doctoral programs; however, graduates of this program are also eligible for licensure in North Carolina. Our Masters in General-Experimental program trains students to be researchers and also prepares them to get into doctoral programs.

Our graduate students and faculty operate the Psychological Services Clinic in McKee Hall. We provide psychological assessment of a wide variety of issues including learning disabilities and ADHD. In addition, we provide counseling services to WCU students and members of the community.

Keeping in line with the emphasis we place on research and developing critical thinking skills, the psychology department also hosts a research colloquium every week. This is an opportunity for our students and guests to learn about innovative research and engage in one-on-one discussion with the presenters after the formal research presentation. I invite you to attend one of our featured presentations.

I encourage you to learn more about our dynamic faculty by visiting their individual webpages. You can also get a glimpse of what our faculty and students are doing by visiting our Spotlights & Highlights page.
