Scholarship Criteria Eligibility Information

Please note: Be careful to read the criteria attached to each scholarship/award. You will find the link to the criteria for each scholarship above. Some scholarships require additional documentation (philosophies of education, letters of reference, etc.) that must be submitted to the Office of Special Programs in G22 McKee or emailed electronically to: Kim Corzine at kpcorzine@wcu.edu. Also note that scholarship monies are awarded the year following the year of application; therefore, a student is eligible to apply if he/she meets the scholarship criteria at the timing of the award. (i.e. freshmen may apply for scholarships listing upperclassmen eligibility if the student will be classified as an upperclassmen by the time the scholarship is awarded).

Morrill Family Fund - Initial Application Due the first Monday in October

Scholarships Available to all majors in the College of Education and Allied Professions

District I, North Carolina Retired School Personnel Senior Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded annually to a rising senior in the College of Education and Allied Professions who is a resident of one of the thirteen Western North Carolina counties.

Carolyn West Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is for junior or seniors who have declared a major within the College of Education and Allied Professions at WCU. The recipient must be enrolled full-time and be in good standing within the College of Education and Allied Professions.

 


 

Scholarships Available to all Teacher Education Majors

Michael Dougherty Family Scholarship
This scholarship, in honor of Retired Dean of Education, Michael A. Dougherty, is for a junior, senior, or graduate students with a declared education major at WCU. Preference will be given to first generation college students.

 

Robert Lee & Ella Richards Madison Scholarship - requires additional documentation-see criteria document for details
This scholarship is for graduates from a public school in Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Transylvania or Swain Counties in NC, who are pursuing a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in the field of education.

Dixie L. & Miles S. McGinty Endowed Scholarship - requires additional documentation-see criteria document for details
This scholarship is open for applications in the fall of odd years by undergraduate students in Modern Foreign Languages and during the fall of even years by doctoral students in Educational Leadership.  Students must be enrolled full time and demonstrate good citizenship and academic standing within the College of Education and Allied Professions.

The Katharine R. Reich and Emma H. Russ Scholarship
This scholarship is for students enrolled full time and who are majoring in Education.

William A. and Patricia L. Ledford Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is for students majoring in Education who are enrolled full-time at WCU and demonstrate good citizenship and academic standing within the College of Education and Allied Professions. Preference shall be given to an academically meritorious student.

The Morrill Family Memorial Fund - requires additional documentation-see criteria document for details
This memorial fund is for full or part-time graduate students in a degree program within the College of Education and Allied Professions. Financial aid is provided to support research that relates to the improvement of teaching at any educational level. The research must be completed by the end of the academic year in which the award is made.

The Duane and Wanda Reid Scholarship Fund
Duane and Wanda Reid pledge to establish an endowed scholarship fund to support junior and senior students majoring in Business and Education at Western Carolina University. Preference will be given to first generation college students.

The Dwight E. and Jessie D. Ryland Scholarship Fund
Dwight E. and Jessie D. Ryland in agreement with the Western Carolina University Foundation have established an endowed fund in support of scholarships for deserving students who attend Western Carolina University who are either math or science education majors.

The Soaring High Scholarship Fund (Student scholarship awarded in even years)
This scholarship was established by Dr. Jacqueline Jacobs in celebration of the grandchildren of Dr. Jacqueline Jacobs and the late Dr. John F. Jacobs. The monetary award is for undergraduate students majoring in education at WCU. The award is open to undergraduate or graduate students applying during the fall of even years.  Students must be pursuing state licensure in education and must be in good standing within the College of Education and Allied Professions.

The Stephanie Ann Stow Scholarship Fund
The family of Stephanie Ann Stow has established this memorial fund to provide scholarships to support education students who are in their student teaching or intern II semester. Preference is given to students from Asheville High School or other Buncombe County high schools.  Note: students must be nominated by faculty to receive this award.

 

Genevieve and E.J. Whitmire Scholarship
This scholarship is for junior, senior, or graduate students majoring in Math or Science Education.

 


 

Scholarships Available to Human Services Majors

Carole Hearn Curtis Scholarship
This scholarship is for a degree-seeking graduate student pursuing a career in counseling. Preference will be given to applicants who are in their final semester of internship.

Mary Deck "Break by the Lake" Endowed Scholarship - requires additional documentation-see criteria document for details
This scholarship is for a graduate student pursuing a career in counseling. Preference will be given to students who are in their field experience semester and have completed a minimum of 30 hour of coursework. Two letters of support from persons other than counseling faculty are required.

Hoyt and Lora Ponder Scholarship - requires additional documentation-see criteria document for details
The Hoyt and Lora Ponder Scholarship recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree or licensure in Early Childhood Education with an intent to work with young children with disabilities.

The Daniel Saddler Scholarship- requires additional documentation-see criteria document for details
Established by the family of Daniel L. Saddler, this scholarship provides support for graduate level counseling students who have completed at least 18 hours in the program, and who have been actively invovled in the program. Preference will be given to part-time students.

Mary and Charles Wayte Graduate Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by the Waytes to support scholarships for graduate students in business and education. The scholarship is for an international student, preferably from the Caribbean or South America majoring in a Human Service field in the College of Education and Allied Professions, preferably counseling and behavior disorders.

 


 

Scholarships Available to Psychology Majors

The Linda Elaine Glenn Scholarship Fund
Preference for this scholarship is given to (1) junior or senior psychology majors, (2) graduate psychology majors, and (3) junior, senior or graduate education majors at WCU. Students must be in good standing in College of Education and Allied Professions and model good citizenship.

 


 

Scholarships Available to Elementary & Middle Grades Majors

Taft B. and Malvery Botner Scholarships
Annual awards are made to academically outstanding students to pursue careers in Elementary Education and Reading. Scholarships are renewable depending upon academic performance and continued promise of success in teaching.

Capps Family Memorial Scholarship
The Capps Family Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 by Dr. Barbara H. Capps, Professor Emeritus of Western Carolina University, in memory of her parents, the late Robert Fletcher Capps and Helen Stroupe Capps. The purpose of the scholarship is to support promising students from Western North Carolina who are majoring in Middle Grades Education.

Jessie Lindsay & John Donivan Hales Scholarship
This fund was established by Jessie Lindsay Hales in memory of her husband, John Donivan Hales. Awards are made to students who are residents of Swain County and who have expressed an intention to major in Elementary Education.

The Linda Reep Lankford Scholarship Fund
This scholarship, established by Jesse R. Lankford in memory of his wife, Linda Reep Lankford, provides assistance to students majoring in Elementary or Middle Grades Education.

Pamela M. Sekulow Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is for a junior or senior at WCU who is majoring in Elementary Education. Preference is given to students demonstrating good citizenship and who are academically successful.

The Rachel R. Williams Sweet Scholarship Fund
The fund was established in honor of Rachel R. Williams Sweet, a 1935 graduate of WCU, to provide financial support to undergraduate students who have expressed an interest in pursuing Early Childhood Education as their major course of study.

Myrtle Olivia Whitmire Scholarships
Students who are residents of North Carolina and who are planning careers in Early Childhood Education are eligible for annual awards. Preference is given to students demonstrating good citizenship and who are academically successful.

Fanny Green Yost Scholarship
This scholarship is for a Jackson County high school graduate who is pursuing an Elementary Education degree. The student must be an accepted and enrolled full-time commuter student. Preference will be given to upperclassmen who are currently working in the classroom.

 


 

Scholarships Available to Special Education Majors

The “Little E.J.” Scholarship Fund
This fund, established by Blanton and E. J. Whitmire in honor of the son of E.J. and Genevieve Whitmire, provides support for junior and senior students majoring in special education.

Jane B. Schulz Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial assistance to late entry students (initial entrance into college at least two calendar years after high school graduation) who express interest in majoring in Special Education.

 


 

Scholarships Available to Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Majors

The Ron Morrow Scholarship
This scholarship is for Health and Physical Education majors who intend to conduct research in the area of diversity, specifically with issues related to sexual orientation. Students must have outstanding academic qualifications, be in good academic standing, and may be undergraduate or graduate students.

The Otto Spilker Scholarship
Established by friends and colleagues of Dr. Otto Spilker, this scholarship endowment assists students in their efforts to obtain a degree from WCU. Students must be full-time graduate students and have a declared major in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

Women in Physical Education
This scholarship is for female Health and Physical Education majors that intend to teach in North Carolina.  Students must exemplify the characteristics embodied by the women being honored by this scholarship.

Gurney and Ann Chambers Scholarship
This scholarship is given to a WCU Athlete who has been formally admitted into the Teacher Education Program. For more information please contact the Development Office http://www.wcu.edu/11.asp

Forgivable Education Loan for Service (FELS) - The Forgivable Education Loans for Service Program was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide assistance to qualified students who are committed to working in North Carolina in designated critical employment shortage professions. The L. Milton Hauser Scholarship Fund
This memorial fund, established by the family of L. Milton Hauser, provides awards to students majoring in elementary or middle grades education. (For further information, contact the Admissions Office.)

Mary Morrow Edna Richards Scholarship - NCAE will award scholarships from its Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarships Fund to deserving junior and senior students who plan to pursue teaching in the public schools of North Carolina. The amount of each scholarship is $1,000.

TASF - Teacher Assistant Scholarship Fund. See website for details at www.cfnc.org/tasf.

Federal TEACH Program
The federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program will provide up to $4,000 a year in grant aid to undergraduate and graduate students and students enrolled in post-baccalaureate teacher credential programs, or current or prospective teachers. Funding is renewable. Candidates must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and must be U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens enrolled as undergraduate students in The TEACH Grant Program. Candidates must be completing course work to become teachers and must have a 3.25 or better grade point average (GPA) or score above the 75th percentile on at least one admissions test. Recipients must sign an agreement to serve as full time teachers for at least four years within eight years of completing their course of study and must teach math, science, special education, or a subject designated as “high need” by the federal or state government or local education agency and approved by the Department, or serve as a reading specialist. In addition, recipients must comply with the requirements for being “highly qualified teachers,” as defined in section 9101(223) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and be willing to serve at a low-income school as deemed by the Department’s Annual Directory of Designated Low-income Schools. The TEACH Grant will convert to an unsubsidized direct loan for recipients who do not fulfill the service commitment. For more information visit this website
