Course Tutors

WaLC course tutors facilitate small-group review sessions for specific courses, assist students with developing effective study and self-management skills, and act as a liaison between students and faculty.

  • Employment type: Work-Study or Non Work-Study
  • Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, leadership roles, and participation in the annual WaLC Associates' Retreat

Writing Tutors

Writing Tutors collaborate with students from all classes and majors at every stage of the writing process. An English concentration is not required to become a writing tutor, but a willingness to learn is. The WaLC also provides the Writing Fellows program that addresses undergraduate writing needs by providing support in classes where faculty members have requested extra help for their students. Writing tutors may be assigned to a specific class in the Writing Fellows program or may provide writing support to all WCU courses.

Academic Skills Consultants (ASCs)

Academic Skills Consultants are successful students who are trained to deliver interactive learning skills workshops and one-on-one consultations to students at Western. Using guided discussions and hands-on activities, ASCs introduce students to effective strategies for time management, note taking, reading, studying, and test taking. In addition, ASCs represent the WaLC and the University at Orientation sessions and Open Houses. Students chosen to work as ASCs have an opportunity to improve their public speaking and interpersonal communication skills while reinforcing their own successful learning strategies.

  • Employment type: Work-Study or Non Work-Study
  • Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, leadership roles, and participation in the annual WaLC Associates' Retreat.
  • Application deadline: Hiring of ASCs is typically conducted once a year, but applications are accepted year round.

International Student Consultants (ISCs)

International Student Consultants are primarily writing tutors who will facilitate one-on-one or small group sessions with International and ESL students, with emphasis on developing conversational skills, understanding the American university system and faculty expectations, and familiarizing students with available resources.

  • Participate in a weekly "International Conversation and Coffee Hour," usually on Mondays from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.
  • Employment type: Work-Study or Non-Work Study
  • Starting pay: $8.00/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, leadership roles, and participation in the annual WaLC Associates' Retreat.

Office Assistants (OAs)

Office Assistants play an integral role in the efficient functioning of the WaLC. Students who are chosen to work as OAs have an opportunity to develop and to practice communication, organization, and other professional skills that will benefit them in life beyond college.

  • Employment type: Work-Study only
  • Starting pay: $7.50/hour with increases available based on training, years of service, leadership roles, and participation in the annual WaLC Associates' Retreat.
  • Application deadline: Hiring is typically conducted during the first week of class each semester, but applications are accepted year round.
