Ceremonies are un-ticketed events and there is no limit to the number of your family
and friends who may attend. Guests should plan to arrive early. Doors will open
approximately one hour prior to the ceremony. Shuttle services will be available
throughout campus.
Line-up: All candidates for degrees must be in line one hour before the processional. During
the line-up, each candidate will be given a printed card that lists name, line-up
number, academic honors (if applicable) and other pertinent information. Correct
positioning is of critical importance.
Disability Related Accommodations: Graduating Students needing disability related accommodations should contact the
Office of Disability Services, 828-227-3886 or email
lalexis@wcu.edu. Some accommodations, such as sign language interpreting, require lead time to arrange
them, so please make requests by the Monday prior to the ceremony.
Awarding of Degrees: Approaching the stage, each candidate will give his/her name card to the faculty
marshal standing at the top of the ramp. When the candidate’s name is read, the candidate
walks across the stage to Chancellor Belcher, extends his/her right hand to shake
hands and receives the diploma cover in his/her left hand.
Photographs: As each graduate is handed his/her diploma, a picture will be taken by a professional
photographer. You will receive an e-mail from the photographer with a link to their
website and instructions to view your graduation photograph. Additionally, a free
color proof will be mailed to your permanent address and you will have the opportunity
to purchase your color prints however, you are under no obligation to purchase these
prints. If you do not receive a proof within a week of the ceremony, please contact
info@photospecialties.com. or call-1-800-722-7033.
Absent from Ceremony: If you cannot be present for the commencement ceremony, please complete the Request
to be excused from Commencement Ceremony Form found at
http://www.wcu.edu/excused_from_commencement.pdf.
