Service Description
Western Carolina University provides three statistics software packages.
SAS – Quantitative Analysis
SPSS – Quantitative Analysis
ATLAS.ti – Qualitative Analysis
Requirements/Limitations
The three software packages only run on Windows Vista or higher. Sufficient hard drive space is required (40-60GB minimum) especially for the SAS software.
SAS – Can be installed on personal and University computers to be used on-or off-campus.
SPSS – Can be installed only on University computers on or off campus. There are 100 licenses that are used concurrently on campus, and when a faculty member wishes to use the software off-campus they can check out a commuter license for up to 7 days.
ATLAS.ti – Can be installed only on University computer to be used on campus only. There are five licenses that are used concurrently.
Eligibility
The use of the statistics software again is dependent on the contracts.
SAS
- Can be installed for faculty on both their WCU computer and their privately owned computer
- Can be installed for staff on their WCU computer
- Student may access SAS in the Open Access Student Labs
SPSS
- Can be installed on any WCU owned computer to be used concurrently
- Students can access the SPSS in the Open Access Student Labs
ATLAS.ti
- Can be installed on any WCU owned computer to be used concurrently
Service Availability
SPSS – This software is available on-campus at any time. Off-campus customers must check out a commuter license to use the software for up to seven (7) days at a time. Customers must then return to campus to check out the commuter license again.
UNC Asheville and Enka both have licenses available for faculty to use at those facilities.
SAS – This software is installed locally on each computer and will be available on demand.
ATLAS.ti – This software is available on campus only any time.
IT’s Role
IT will forward requests to the Coulter Faculty Commons unless they involve installing software in the labs and/or e-classrooms.

Faculty and staff may get assistance from the Coulter Faculty Commons (227-7196) in the basic use of the software. The Coulter Faculty Commons staff member involved in research can show you how to perform a statistical analysis that you would like more information about but cannot recommend any specific analysis to run or comment on the viability of the resulting analysis.
Faculty may contact the CFC to be connected with a faculty member who may offer assistance in analyzing the resulting data from a study as time permits.
Students must get statistical assistance from their faculty member(s).
