The Division of Information Technology manages and operates two microcomputer labs for Western Carolina University students to use to assist them with the completion of class assignments. The Technology Commons is staffed with trained Student Technology Assistants to aid students in the use of the computer workstations. Forsyth 313 is unmanned during business hours.
- Forsyth 313
- Technology Commons
All computer workstations are networked and provide access to various university network resources, as well as the World Wide Web. Basic software accessible on all lab microcomputers includes the Microsoft Office 2007/2008 Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access), Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and FTP applications (both Mac and Windows platforms are supported).
In addition to these standard supported software applications, other curriculum specific software is also available. Information Technology does not provide support for this software. Students using curriculum specific software must contact their professors for support. Student Technology Assistants are not trained in the operations of all curriculum specific software, and therefore are not responsible for support on those particular packages.
The Open Access Student Computer Labs are maintained and supported by Student Technology fees, which are included with each student's tuition. Consequently, faculty and staff ARE NOT ALLOWED to use the computers in any of the Open Access Labs.
All Open Access Computer Labs are equipped with security cameras.
