Service Description
We offer a standardized desktop configuration, including operating system, productivity software, and other basic software.
WCU Minimum Computer Specifications for Institutional Use
Setup New Computers:
All new computers bought by the University are setup with this standard configuration. We install network connectivity and access to various systems, as have been granted to the University employee at the time the computer is setup. Non-standard, but University-supported software can also be installed at this time.
The WCU Division of IT (DoIT) will attempt to migrate only the data stored in the My Documents (or Documents) folder from your old computer and restore it to your new computer. Although the DoIT offers this assistance, you are responsible for maintaining a backup of any essential data stored on your computer.
The DoIT recommends that faculty and staff regularly save data on their H: drive located
on the Mercury server. The data on the hard drive of a computer is not backed up by
the DoIT. Data stored on the network (H: \\mercury\share) is backed up by the DoIT.
More information on data stewardship and responsibility can be found in this web page:

Tutorials on how to backup your data are available via iTunes University:

Under Training and Support Services you will find backup instructions for Windows 7, XP, Vista and Mac OS X.
