Learning Communities

WCU ImageWhat is a Learning Community?

Learning Communities foster integrated learning environments that have the potential to provide a significant impact on learning outcomes and establish a strong support network. Learning Communites:

  • Encourage integrated and interdisciplinary teaching and learning designs, allowing connections through a holistic approach.
  • Offer a framework through which to participate in service learning, civic engagement, and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Empower a successful transition into college life by creating strong connections to the new college environment.

Learning Communities provide students with the opportunity to develop friendships and experience learning as a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives during their transition to campus life. There are two primary types of Learning Communities at WCU, and a host of variations that provide students with opportunities that are dynamic and fluid - driven by passionate faculty and staff.

A Curricular Learning Community (CLC) is a set of linked courses that place students with similar interests together in two or three courses. Instructors collaborate to define the connections and intersections of paired courses. These cohorts can function independently of residential communities or with them, depending on a range of factors. For more details on CLC cohorts and schedules visit this page.

Living-Learning Community (LLC)

In a Living-Learning Community, students are organized into living-learning cohorts that appeal to their interests and goals, thus the classroom and the living room reinforce and promote integrated learning. These communities connect residential life with on course or a full academic cohort. For more details on Living-Learning cohorts, visit this page for more information.
