Foundation
The FYE Student Council was established in 2010 as an active advisory board and partner of the FYE Cabinet. The student representatives are nominated by faculty and staff to provide the student perspective and counsel to the FYE Cabinet, which is comprised of faculty and staff from across WCU. Being ever mindful that the student voice is central to the mission of the Cabinet and to the goals of the Office of First Year Experiences, this student group provides an invaluable service to the institution and to the future generations of students who will become WCU first-year students. As an ‘active’ advisory board, these students have embraced a hands-on approach; they are leaders and role models as they provide service, insight, and energy.
Mission Statement of the FYE Student Council
As representatives of the student body, this FYE Student Council supports the direction of the First Year Cabinet, and the Office of First Year Experiences, in their effort to:
- Provide this university and its students with a network of collaboration between departments;
- Support a holistic learning environment throughout campus;
- Promote successful learning outcomes within the classroom and within the students' everyday lives
FYE Student Council Profiles (Gabby Robinson, Dalton Mallonee, Aaron Marshall)
Hi, my name is Gabby Robinson. I am 19 years old and was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a freshman, three hours away from home, here at Western Carolina University. So far my journey he has been amazing. I have enjoyed all of the new people that I have met through my classes and my resident hall and look forward to others who I may meet.
I am currently majoring in Chemistry with a concentration of pre-medicine but I will soon be switching it to Emergency Medical Care. After Western, I hope to be accepted into the medical school program at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. I hope to one day, when I grow up, be a surgeon at a top hospital in North Carolina. Some of the things that I am involved in include the First Year Experience Student Council and Honors College. I work in the Office for Undergraduate Studies and love working there.
I also love being here at Western and I am looking forward to my next three and a half years here!
Hey guys! My name is Dalton Mallonee. I’m a sophomore this year at WCU and I’m majoring
in History and Social Science Education. I was asked to serve on the First-Year Experience
Student Council last semester and I am very excited to be able to contribute however
I am able to making experiences for first-year students, and everyone else on campus,
even better than they already are. In addition to serving on the FYE Student Council
I also serve as one of the Co-Presidents of the WCU chapter of SNCAE (Student North
Carolina Association of Educators) and I also am helping to start another club on
campus as well. I currently work at the University Writing Center as a second semester
Writing Fellow, and I enjoy my job immensely. I enjoy reading, video games, movies,
historical research, and being with my friends and family. When I graduate from WCU
I haven’t quite decided on the direction I plan to take. I plan on either attending
graduate school at NC State University, or diving straight into the teaching profession
and teaching history at a public high school in North Carolina. I look forward to
making the first semester of this FYE Student Council productive, meaningful, and
responsive to the concerns and ideas of the faculty, staff, administration, and, most
importantly, the student body of WCU.
