To get to the office, take Hwy 107 to Sylva, then turn left at Ingles, onto Webster Road. Turn right after approximately a quarter of a mile into the new Jackson County Services Park. The Department on Aging is in the large building at the top of the hill. To get to the project site, take Hwy 107 to Sylva, take a right onto the Asheville
Highway road, take a left at McDonald's. Take a right onto Mineral Spring Dr., then
a right at the recycling center, to the left of their gate, behind the recycling center
is the wood storage. |
| Agency Description: | Project F.I.R.E. is a heating assistance program that delivers firewood to needy people.
This project is part of the Jackson County Department on Aging. |
| Training: | Groups of volunteers should send a representative for a short orientation a few days
before their project date. |
| Time Commitment: | Varies, usually a few hours on Saturday mornings. There will be workdays every first
Saturday morning of the month from October to March, starting at 8:00 a.m. |
| Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: | All skill levels are welcome. Volunteers who have pickup trucks to use for deliveries
are especially helpful. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, and may bring
tools if they have them. You must have good people skills and relate easily with
the older population. |
| Volunteer Involvement: | Volunteers will help split, load, and deliver firewood in Jackson County. Refreshments
are provided to volunteers on delivery days. Contact the Center for Service Learning
