Agency Description:  

A non-profit organization offering community-based services such as monthly food distribution, monthly senior dinners, summer enrichment program/day camp, as well as after-school tutoring, ESL classes, and basic and advanced English and Spanish classes.  This is a primarily led African-Americans organization.  We serve all families of Haywood but our target groups are African-American and Latino/Hispanic families.  However, we are open to all people regardless of race or ethnic background.

Our facility is located in the only black elementary school building in the Waynesville area before desegregation.

Training:  

Orientation and or training are provided for all volunteers.

Time Commitment:  

There is varied time commitment, depending on the duty of the volunteer.  We have opportunities for volunteers that range from a few hours to weeks and months according to the job being filled.  There is always something to be done in whatever amount of time that volunteers have to offer.

Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements:  

Some jobs require physical strength and stamina. (i.e. food distribution requires some heavy lifting).

 Knowledge of ESL, computer skills, arts and crafts, data base entries, web design, general maintenance  (i.e. paint, electrical, window replacements, plumbing, etc.), office and clerical skills.

All volunteers that will be working with the children require a background check and drug screening.

Volunteer Involvement:  

Volunteers for summer program may be involved in arts & crafts, music, outdoor activities, field trips, food service, computers, math/reading, spelling coach, housekeeping services.
