| Agency Description: | A community-based nonprofit organization with a mission of promoting family self-sufficiency
through employment, training, and special programs. Founded in 1965 in response to
President Johnson's War on Poverty, the organization now provides vital services to
thousands of clients, including the elderly, disadvantaged people, and the general
public in Haywood and Jackson Counties. |

| Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: | Eldercare needs volunteers to go to homes of elderly to help with small things such
as mowing the grass, cleaning gutters, cutting and stacking wood or just visiting;
Christmas boxes for the homebound are needed - the boxes can include canned foods,
pens & paper, tissue and small personal items. In addition, volunteers with skills
in building, landscaping, etc., can be useful with the Self-Help Housing Program.
Students with skills in marketing can be used to develop and distribute agency information. |
| Volunteer Involvement: | Examples of volunteer work include mentoring, tutoring, literacy tutoring, working
with elderly, friendly visitors for homebound elderly, grass mowing for disabled and
elderly, Christmas box delivery (Dec. 12-17), assisting with the Self-Help Housing
program, public relations activities, and fundraising for agency programs. Help is
needed with grant writing and nutritional assessment. |
