| Location: | Take Hwy 107 to Sylva, turn left at Hwy 116. Drive about 1/8 mile, and you will see
the Jackson County Department of Social Services on the right. Park in the front parking
lot and proceed to the receptionist. |
| Agency Description: | The Jackson County Department of Social Services is a client-oriented agency that
responds to all age groups from infancy to the elderly. The mission of this agency
is to strengthen individual and family life, to support independent living, and to
improve the quality of human existence. Major goals of the Department are the following:
the prevention of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and disruption of family life; the
protection of the emotionally, mentally, and physically disabled, the elderly, children
and families in life-threatening situations; and the networking of the client's strengths
with agency and community support services in remaining or becoming self-sufficient.
Services include adoption, adult protective services, child day care services, child
protective services, child support enforcement, community alternative and special
assistance programs, emergency financial assistance, food stamps, Medicaid, medical
transportation, services for the blind, and work-first family assistance. |

| Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: | Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. |
| Volunteer Involvement: | Assistance with promotion and provision of services; database upgrading; office assignments. |
