| Agency Description: | The Healing Place provides support, advocacy, counseling and information for people
who have been raped or sexually assaulted, as well as for their families and friends.
Their mission is to provide crisis intervention, support, and counseling to victims
of sexual assault and child abuse and to increase awareness and prevention through
community education. |
| Training: | Both education and on-call volunteers will receive training for each of the positions.
A 20-hour training for the on-call volunteers will be provided by the staff of The
Healing Place. A 3- to 4-hour training will be provided for education volunteers. |
| Time Commitment: | Education and on-call volunteers are needed immediately. On call volunteers will commit
to a 12-hour shift (6 p.m.-6 a.m.) on call-shifts as scheduled and agreed upon. On-call
at home or with a pager. Education volunteers' time commitment is based on the availability
of each individual volunteer, but generally involves a presentation to public school
children during the school day. |
| Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: |
Education Volunteers must be 18 years of age. They must complete a volunteer application, provide the agency with two personal references, submit to a background check, and sign a confidentiality statement. Volunteers will attend and complete training provided by The Healing Place. They should enjoy working with children ages 5-15 years, have good human relations skills and a willingness to be objective. Volunteers must demonstrate a willingness to work within the guidelines, policies and standards of The Healing Place, as well as a willingness to receive guidance and direction, and the ability to work as part of a team. They should show sensitivity to cultural/ethnic differences and have an awareness of their own feelings and attitudes and the ability to share them or set them aside appropriately. On-Call Volunteers must be 18 years of age. They must complete a volunteer application,
provide the agency with two personal references, submit to a background check, and
sign a confidentiality statement. Volunteers will attend and complete training provided
by The Healing Place. They must have the ability to provide telephone counseling
and/or meet in person with the victim, an ability to express concern and empathy,
and an ability to understand the issues of sexual assault. |
| Volunteer Involvement: | Education Volunteer: Present approved prevention education concerning the issues of
sexual assault to children in all grades in school. Present programs to educate the
community about sexual assault issues. Provide immediate emotional and informational
support to victims of rape and sexual assault and to their families and friends. Office
volunteers are also needed. |
