| Location: | Travel on 19/23/74 towards Waynesville. Take exit 102 to 276 South - Russ Avenue. Drive
through four traffic lights and turn left at the fifth light just past Wachovia Bank.
Turn right a the second light to the Haywood County Department of Social Services. Park
in the large parking lot on the left. |
| Agency Description: | Meals on Wheels provides nutritious to the elderly, homebound and disabled Haywood
County residents who are unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. Volunteers
are needed to deliver meals on a regular or substitute basis. |
| Training: | Volunteers will receive on-the-job training to learn their route and will be introduced
to their clients. |
| Time Commitment: | Delivery time is approximately two hours, usually from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Most volunteers
have a regular delivery day and route. Substitute drivers may work various days to
fill-in for regular drivers. |
| Skills, Experience, and Special Requirements: | The Meals on Wheels volunteer should have an understanding of the elderly and be able
to empathize with the medical conditions of their clients. Meals on Wheels provides
not only a nutritious meal but also personal contact. The volunteer may be the only
person the recipient sees all day long so a positive attitude is essential. In case
of an emergency, volunteers are trained to immediately call 911 and then the Program
Coordinator to contact family members and the social worker. |
| Volunteer Involvement: | Volunteers will deliver nutritious meals to the elderly, homebound and disabled on
a regular or substitute basis. They may also visit their recipients after all meals
on their route have been delivered. |
