2002:

University approves creation of Service Learning Department in Student Affairs Division

   
2003: (January)  First Director of Service Learning hired
  First Service-Learning Advisory Committee appointed
  Jacob Spencer Medford Service-Learning Scholarship Fund created
  First issue of The Service-Learning Sentinel (newsletter) published
  (August)  The University of North Carolina (Office of the President) grants approval to establish Center for Service Learning as institutional research center
   
2004: (September) Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program begins
  (September) Second Director of Service Learning hired; Strategic Plan created
   
2005: Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program expanded (with Fellow assigned to each college)
  Alternative Spring Break launched (with hurricane rehabilitation trip to Pensacola, FL)
  (April)  Annual Service-Learning Awards Program begins
  (June)  Inaugural Service-Learning Symposium held
  (September)  WCU becomes member institution of Campus Compact
   
2006: (January)  Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event begins
  (January) Inaugural Community Service-Learning Fair staged
  First overseas Alternative Spring Break (international service-learning) trip: “Project Panama”
  (August)  Civic Place residential program launched
  First Assistant Director of Service Learning hired
 

WCU endorses the Presidents’ Declaration on the Civic Responsibility of Higher Education

WCU Service Learning student nominee selected as national finalist for Campus Compact’s Howard R. Swearer Humanitarian Award

   
2007: (July)  Service Learning transferred to Academic Affairs (as unit under Undergraduate Studies); unit renamed Center for Service Learning
  Center for Service Learning begins participating in NC Campus Compact-AmeriCorps*VISTA Program
  Alternative Break Program expanded (with Fall Break trip to Johns Island, SC)
  (October)  Service-Learning Course Designation approved by Faculty Senate
   
2008: Number of Community Partners and service sites surpasses 100
  Campus Kitchen Garden Project launched
  WCU named to the 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
  Annual conference renamed Symposium on Service Learning & Civic Engagement
   
2009: WCU named to the 2008 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction
 

WCU featured in national publication Guide to Service-Learning Colleges and Universities (Student Horizons & Kendall/Hunt, 2009)

(April)  Center for Service Learning receives the Support Program of Excellence Award from the University

WCU given Higher Education Civic Engagement “Honorable Mention” by the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars

Catamount Student Service Corps created

(November) WCU hosted the 17th Annual North Carolina Campus Compact Student Conference

 

2010:

WCU named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction

(Spring) WCU Student Government Association votes to creat position for Service-Learning Senator; first Senator elected   

(August) Campus Kitchen Garden Club of WCU formed
