What people are saying about the ASP Program

The following E-mail is from parents of an ASP student:

Our son attending ASP at Western was the best decision we have ever made as a family. ASP prepared our son with the study skills, focus and determination to finish the summer with grades far above those he achieved in high school. The smaller class sizes allowed him to get to know his professors and what they wanted at the college level. Now, as a first semester freshman, he is confident, dedicated and focused. The ASP staff is amazing. They really care not only about student grades but the whole person. In addition to our son acclimating better to college, it made the separation much easier on us knowing he would be with 130 kids as opposed to 10,000. We strongly recommend this program. Again, it is the best decision we have ever made.

Hi Janina,

This is Stephanie Soler. You might not remember me, but I was in ASP the summer session of 2010. I'm emailing you today to sincerely thank you for the ASP program, because of it I am now a successful graduate of Western Carolina University. I graduated last Saturday.  ASP really helped me succeed in college and I'm so grateful for the program and the opportunity. ASP is what motivated me to do my best in school and work hard for what I want. Because of ASP, I was able to graduate a year early from college. I graduated high school with a 2.7 GPA and now I can proudly say because of this program I graduated college with a overall 3.5 GPA as well as graduate from the Honors College. In high school I barely tried, but ASP showed me how important it is to put your best foot forward when it comes to education and every opportunity. This program is so beneficial and it does so much good for the students of Western. I am happy to say I'm a proud WCU Alumni of ASP and am sincerely grateful for your hard work with this program. Please keep in touch and thank you again.

Sincerely, Stephanie Soler [2010 ASP Student]

“The ASP program helped me transition into college easier, get a head start, be prepared for college, get to know the campus, and meet new people .  [It] helped me develop better time management skills, study habits, attitudes toward learning, determination, and balancing school and social life.”
Skylar Perkins, 2011 ASP Student
“After completing the program, I realized it equipped me with new studying and learning strategies, taught me how to manage my time and prioritize, as well as easing me into the college lifestyle.”
Owen Carter, 2011 ASP Student

“I was really excited that I was starting college earlier than my friends. I also knew that I would get seven hours ahead, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to get prepared for college.”
Derek Holt, 2011 ASP Student

"It is impossible for me to adequately convey my respect and appreciation for the Academic Success Program and its staff.  Over the five week summer program, the support my student received allowed him to finish the summer with a higher GPA than he had in high school.  What he leaned from the ASP staff about expectations from both Western Carolina University and his fellow students prepared him for success in the Fall semester.  His Fall semester GPA outperformed his Summer!  When a Student realizes that the staff is truly there to give him/her the support and tools to succeed, and they utilize these resources, they flourish. The ASP Program and its exceptional staff work closely with students, both in a group setting and individually, to make them responsible for themselves and their performance at the highest possible level. For parents, they take our "children" and return to us STUDENTS - motivated young adults. ASP works!"
Bruce Irvine, 2011 ASP Parent

“Just wanted to let you know that our son, James M. Thigpen, graduated from Western in December 2010 - in just 3 1/2 years! We are very proud of him since he enrolled in Western through the ASP program the summer of 2007. That is such a wonderful program and was such a great preparation for college for him - and as a result of that program and his hard work he graduated early with a GPA of 3.5! Can't say enough about ASP!!”

“[We] would both like to thank you and your entire staff for the wonderful ASP program Jimmy participated in this summer! We are thrilled with the results and so is he. I plan on talking to the guidance counselors at [his high school] about the ASP program at Western Carolina University . They need to hear more about this wonderful program so they can recommend it to other students who might also need a little extra preparation for college. Thanks again.”
Donna Thigpen, 2007 ASP Parent

“Even though it doesn't seem like it, this is real life and the decisions you make here can affect you for the rest of your life.”
Jared Parnell, 2004 ASP

“You will make new friends before the rest of your rising class, you will have [seven] hours completed, and you will know the campus like the back of your hand.”
Brian Shanks, 2004 ASP

“ASP was probably one of the smartest and most rewarding things I have done. ASP gave me a head start on the college atmosphere and the college ‘life.'”
Chris Blanken, 2004 ASP

“Even though I was mad that I had to go to school in the summer, it ended up being one of the best summers of my life. ASP was rewarding academically and I met a lot of great friends.”
Lauren Priestley, 2004 ASP

“ASP makes the transitions from high school to college very smooth and prepares you [for] what you are going to see once the fall term starts. The ASP program had a great set up for residential life and since the ASP group was not that large everyone had a chance to get to know each other.”
Ryan Smith, 2004 ASP

“… being here for ASP during the summer helped me overcome my fears and anxiety about college life …”
Megan Seams, 2003 ASP

“I hope you choose to participate in this life-changing program. You won't regret it.”
Lizzie Moss, 2003 ASP

“Attending this program helped to show me how college is different from high school even before classes started in the fall.”
Jessica Zahn, 2002 ASP
