The 2020 Commission will oversee a three-phase process commencing in Fall 2011. Chancellor Belcher will
initiate the process by issuing to campus and external communities an invitation and
challenge to participate in this endeavor and by outlining his call for a new strategic
plan at his August address to the campus. In September and October, the Chancellor
will host a series of roundtable discussions and online discussion venues through
which campus and community members can provide initial input on how WCU will address
the opportunities and challenges of the next decade.
In November, The 2020 Commission will distill those conversations into a set of 6-8 Strategic Directions that will serve as a thematic framework for additional planning activities. The Strategic Directions will form the heart of the Strategic Plan, providing organizational structure and institutional focus and defining the major long-term priorities of the institution. Between late November and late January, a set of subcommittees structured along the lines of the Strategic Directions will develop a set of corresponding Goals and Initiatives to give specificity to the Strategic Directions and establish expectations of success. The Initiatives will be further refined to include an action plan that outlines the unit(s) responsible for implementation, a timeline, resources needed, and performance targets. The 2020 Commission will regularly seek campus and community input on drafts of its work.
In March and April of 2012, The 2020 Commission will solicit feedback from the university’s various internal and external constituencies before making a final presentation to the WCU Board of Trustees in June 2012.
The second and third phases will take the planning down to the division and unit levels. In Phase II, division heads will lead their units through a process that will develop complementary strategies and actions that link back to the institutional plan. Phase III will be ongoing as the plan is implemented and results are annually reviewed.
