Faculty / Staff Conversation - Session 10

This was a very small group.

Theme 1: Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities

A strength cited was the emphasis on teaching, that this is a teaching institution, geared toward students, with good resources available for faculty to faciitate their teaching. Also noted that good teaching was connected to research and professional activities.

A weakness cited was a lack of infratructure to support research, and an internal organizational system that at times impeded progress on research initiatives. An example given was a lack of clear procedure for research subcontracting. The need for better communication was cited.

A need for better communication with the community about what western does and can do was suggested. We have great resources for the community but they do not always know how to access them.

Theme 2 & 3: Priorities/Vision, Community

Priority should be educating quality students who will contribute to an educated workforce in the region. But we should be educating students to be job creators and not just training them for existing positions. Support entrepreneurship of all kinds and links with community and alumni so that WCU people can make the jobs, not just “get” the jobs. WCU should continue to work with alumni on research and support  their initiatives and continue to be a resource after graduation when they need help in getting established.
