Crime Prevention

Police officers are available to present crime-prevention and safety programs to members of the University community. Topics that may be addressed include personal safety, property security and theft prevention, hate crime information, alcohol and drug use and abuse, and parking issues and traffic safety. Additionally, the Police Department partners with other University departments, such as the Department of Intrcultural Affairs and the Department of Residential Living to present programming that addresses specific issues. Requests for programs should be made by calling Services Sgt. Tammy Ammons-Hagberg, Victims Services and Crime Prevention Coordinator at 828.227.3059 or thagberg@email.wcu.edu. Information regarding safety on campus is typically presented to all new students attending orientation sessions.

During the academic year, Student Health Services, the Counseling and Psychological Services Center, the Campus Recreation Center, the Department of Residential Living, and other Student Affairs units and staff present programs on sexual assault, alcohol and drug awareness, dating violence, conflict resolution, and other topics related to crime prevention and personal safety. These offices and their staff emphasize the hazards and responsibilities of living in a university community and encourage students to be responsible for their safety and the safety of others. For information regarding the availability of programming or services, call the Student Affairs Office at 828-227-7234.

Information regarding crime prevention and safety tips may be accessed though the Police Department’s website.
