1) Mandatory Plan
The Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System is exclusive to the University of North Carolina System and North Carolina State government. All permanent employees who work at least 30 hours per week for nine or more months per year are required to participate by contributing a percentage of their monthly salary. This contribution is made on a pre-tax basis. As a "defined benefit plan," the benefit you receive at retirement is determined by a formula, rather than the accumulation in your personal retirement account.
