Hunter Library

Hunter Library considers providing high-quality service to students and faculty as its primary mission. Twelve librarians provide both individualized research assistance and classroom instruction. The library is open more than 110 hours per week during the semester. All electronic resources are available from on or off campus 24 hours per day.

There are 9 major collections that support student and faculty research:

The general collection consists of over 600,000 volumes. The library also provides access to over 10,000 electronic books.

The journal and newspaper collections of over 1,200 print subscriptions and 8,000 full text online journals. The library also provides articles from approximately 25,000 journal titles through its no charge document delivery service that is available to all students, faculty and staff.

The majority of course reserve materials are available online.

The microfiche and microfilm collection has over 1.4 million pieces, including major historical research collections of primary documents.

The library is a selective depository for federal documents. Government documents provides access to over 225,000 government documents from both the Federal and the North Carolina governments.

Special Collections contains manuscript collections, books, photographs and other resources documenting the history of Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia, the history of the Cherokee Indians, and literary works and papers of Western North Carolina authors.

The Map Room collection contains more than 12,000 sheet maps and an extensive collection of digital mapping data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to support it.

The Media Collection is an extensive collection of audiotapes, CDs, videotapes, DVDs and other media.

The Curriculum Materials Center maintains collections of state-adopted textbooks, curriculum guides, children's literature and other classroom instructional materials in support of the university's professional education programs.

Access to these collections is provided via a state of the art online library catalog and through 80+ online databases in addition to many other reference tools and library supported web pages. The online catalog is shared with Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Asheville, which provides access to a combined collection of over 950,000 titles. Students, faculty and staff may easily borrow books, journals and media materials from these libraries through a delivery service operated by the three libraries.
