ResNet announces changes for spring 2005

Residential Networking (ResNet) encountered a major change last semester with the technical support side of ResNet moving over to the IT Services department. Many students have found that this approach has improved the quality of service they are receiving. This semester ResNet is taking the support a step further by fully integrating student technical support into the current support model that is used for faculty and staff.

Students will now have one number to call for assistance instead of a list of RCC numbers that they can call. When they call the IT Services Help Desk their problem will be entered into the call tracking system as a ticket. RCC's will then be assigned to the ticket and will contact the student in order to resolve the problem. Students will no longer have to leave voicemail for multiple RCCs or have to deal with messages not being received because of full voicemail inboxes.

Students are encouraged to use the IT Services Help Desk email account (itshelp@email.wcu.edu) as an alternative to the Help Desk number. This account is checked regularly and is available for use by students in requesting computer assistance.

The ResNet and Networking groups are also actively planning the network upgrades for Walker, Scott, Helder, Leatherwood, Harrill, Albright/Benton, and Robertson. The Division of Information Technology will perform a major upgrade of the data network in the majority of the residence halls during the week of January 31. The result of the upgrade will be a faster more reliable network for residential students. An additional upgrade to the fiber optic infrastructure that is planned for later this semester will provide increased bandwidth to the residence halls.

In order to implement the data network upgrade, access to the network from the residence halls will be unavailable as indicated on the following schedule:

More information about this upgrade can be found at www.wcu.edu/it. If you have questions or concerns about this project, please contact the IT division at 227-7487.

The Resnet and Networking groups are also actively installing wireless access points in the common areas of the residence halls. This process may take most of the semester; the expectation is to have a wireless presence in every residence hall by the end of the semester.
